Dialect policy on Ripuarian Wiki
[der Quälltäx ändere]Hello! I am visiting from the Rusyn Wikipedia. Rusyn is also a language with several varieties. Rusyn Wiki followed other Wikipedias in that situation in theory, but the actual policies were never laid out. If you have the time to respond, I’d like to learn more about your approach. I already found some information myself, but I'll mention that too in case you have anything to add. Thank you very much in advance!
- Do you have policies for language use on Wikipedia written down?
- Is there a "default" variety option for use in the interface, article & category names etc.? Enwiki: "Although it had been planned to provide at least two varieties of Ripuarian, that did not work out due to a series of mishaps." Could you tell more about it? I was not aware this was supported by Mediawiki, it would be very interesting to know.
- At present, how often do people contribute edits in different varieties?
- Can a page normally feature more than one variety? If not, what is the approach you follow instead? How does one edit an article written in a different dialect?
- Is your approach to local topics any different (e.g. prioritising the local variety)?
- I noticed some information on what I assume are different sets of orthographic conventions. Do you require editors to follow any of them?
- Some Wikipedias in polycentric languages eventually split (e.g. Armenian). Do you think that is a possibility for your Wikipedia?
Thank you and all the best. Engelseziekte (Klaafe) 00:45, 14. Sep 2020 (CEST)
Okt 2020 (CET)
Global bot policy proposal: invitation to a Meta discussion
[der Quälltäx ändere]Hallo!
I apologize for sending a message in English. According to the list, your wiki project currently is opted in to the global bot policy. Under this policy, bots that fix double redirects or maintain interwiki links are allowed to operate under a global bot flag that is assigned directly by the stewards.
As the Wikimedia projects developed, the need for the current global bot policy decreased, and in the past years, no bots were appointed via that policy. That is mainly given Wikidata were estabilished in 2013, and it is no longer necessary to have dozens of bots that maintain interwiki links.
A proposal was made at Meta-Wiki, which proposes that the stewards will be authorized to determine whether an uncontroversial task may be assigned a global bot flag. The stewards already assign permissions that are more impactful on many wikis, namely, global sysops and global renamers, and I do not think that trust should be an issue. The stewards will assign the permission only to time-proven bots that are already approved at a number of projects, like ListeriaBot.
By this message, I would like to invite you to comment in the global RFC, to voice your opinion about this matter.
Thank you for your time.
Best regards,
